AI literacy is the most critical skill of 2026.
When the printing press was invented, books became accessible to everyone. But owning a book wasn't the same as being literate. Societies that closed the gap rose, those that didn't fell behind.
We are experiencing the same thing today. Only this time it's not the printing press, it's AI. And this time the speed is a few years, not hundreds. The same models, the same tools, the same access, everyone has it. Nothing will be the same, that's for sure. But just like with the printing press, it's not enough to just possess the technology. You need to know what to do with it.
Paul Graham said this years ago in "Taste for Makers": when you're forced into simplicity, you have to solve the real problem. AI does the opposite. It hides complexity. It produces polished outputs. And you think "the problem is solved." But it's not your problem that's solved. It's the solution to a problem interpreted by AI.
Anthropic showed how widespread this is with data this week. The AI Fluency Index study analyzed 9,830 conversations. The most striking finding is this: when AI produces an output that looks good to you, you stop questioning. Questioning logic -3.1 points, noticing missing information -5.2 points, checking facts -3.7 points. In other words, the better the leverage, the more relaxed people become. In the early years of printing, people thought, "what's printed is true." Today, we think, "what AI produces is true." The same trap, just a different century.
I see people falling into this trap every day. At Flalingo, we're building an AI infrastructure that manages 133,000+ students, 2,500+ teachers, and millions of lessons. The clearest pattern I've seen in this process is that the common trait of people who get really good results from AI isn't technical skill, but knowing what they want.
I observe this most concretely in developers. I constantly tell my team: coding is over. Now, a developer's value is measured not by their speed of coding, but by their ability to define the right problem. A junior developer tells Claude, "Make me a login page." The output comes back. It looks good. Copy and paste, done. But what was the user's real need? What affects conversion? Where would the drop-off be? He hasn't even considered these things. Whereas a developer who understands the business would have thought about this beforehand. They know user behavior, understand the business model, grasp the meaning of metrics. They give the AI a specific context, query the output, and iterate. The same tool, the same model, completely different results.
Because the real issue is no longer "how do I code?" The real issue is context engineering. That is, having the structure ready in your head before sitting down with the AI. What problem are you solving, who is the user, what are the constraints, what does success look like? Without knowing this clearly, no matter how good a prompt you write for the AI, the output will remain superficial. But someone who has prepared can use the AI as a multiplier. Guillermo Rauch summarizes this well in his article "On APIs": producing software is now almost free, but knowing what needs to be done is still the scarcest resource.
Alongside this preparation, the second critical skill is iteration. Anthropic's data also shows this: those who iterate exhibit 2x more fluency, and their rate of questioning the AI's logic is 5.6 times higher. There's a huge gap between those who accept the initial output as final and those who see it as a draft and work on it. In only 30% of conversations do users tell the AI how it should work; 70% take the initial answer and leave.
The third, and in my opinion the least discussed, skill is parallel work. Imagine, the AI is writing the code, generating the content, and analyzing the data for you. So what are you doing? If your answer is "I'm waiting," you're not using leverage. People who truly use AI well manage multiple workflows simultaneously. While Claude is working on one module, you're preparing the context for another. While waiting for the output of one prompt, you're planning another workflow. The way of doing things is no longer sequential, but simultaneous. And this requires a mental shift. Instead of focusing on and finishing a single task, you need to learn to orchestrate multiple workflows. So, in the age of AI, your role is shifting from being the one doing the work to being the one managing it.
Last year, we experienced this firsthand in our marketing team. We automated a project that would normally require 4-5 people using AI, and with a single junior, we achieved 8x more output. The difference was the same: there was preparation, the context was clear, the outputs were iteratively improved, and parallel workflows were executed throughout the process. A single person, with the right approach, surpassed the output of an entire team.
AI is probably the biggest lever we've seen since printing. When used correctly, it can equate one person to a hundred. But the strength of the leverage doesn't mean the hand holding it is unimportant. Quite the opposite. The stronger the leverage, the more crucial it is who uses it and how.
Printing democratized information, but democratizing literacy took centuries. AI has democratized power. It's up to us to democratize literacy. And this time, we don't have centuries.
AI literacy isn't about writing prompts. It's about preparation. Context engineering. It's about iterating.
